SAM Kicks Off Spring 2020 Semester with Guest Speaker

The Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) kicked off the semester with a guest speaker session on Tuesday, February 4, 2020.  Eastern Kentucky University's Dr. Melissa Lynn Newman, Executive Director of Regional Programming and Regional Stewardship, was invited to talk to SAM members about her office's ongoing initiatives, student internship opportunities, partnerships with SOAR and Kentucky Promise Zone.  Students also learned about Eastern Kentucky's economic landscape, as well as some potential work at different levels (e.g., government, non-profit organizations, etc.) which explores more revenue sources for Eastern Kentucky.  Particularly, Dr. Newman spoke about her research on the psychological part of economy recovery.  Her office developed a toolkit to pass along to teachers in the economy-depressed counties in Eastern Kentucky.  This was done in hope that teachers would incorporate the toolkits into their curriculum in order to instill hope in the younger minds and to grow into the mainstream body for building their communities.

In the end, Dr. Newman and students exchanged their thoughts about various topics such as renewable energies, coal-mining economy, as well as long-distance learning.
