Roberson and Robles Receive Outstanding Research Award from Association for Research in Business Education

Dr. Michael Roberson and Dr. Marcel Robles received the Outstanding Research Paper Award at the recent Association for Research in Business Education - Delta Pi Epsilon Conference.  ARBE-DPE met in Cincinnati to celebrate 76 years for Delta Pi Epsilon and to celebrate becoming the research division of the National Business Education Association. The conference theme was "Transformation for Business Education: Meeting Challenges in the Profession."

The best research paper award was presented to Roberson and Robles for their research entitled, "The State of Studying and Learning in Business Schools Today: Applying an Expectancy Theory Framework." Today’s college students spend less time studying than previous generations. In their paper the authors discuss the results of a survey given to sophomore and junior business students regarding their study habits. The researchers attempted to identify the possible explanations for students' reduced study time including any association with the number of work hours devoted to paid employment. Recommendations for better understanding student motivations and attempting to motivate greater student effort toward their studies were provided.

According to Dr. Robles, "One of the purposes of the Association for Research in Business Education - Delta Pi Epsilon (ARBE—DPE) is to encourage and recognize independent research in business education by offering an annual award for the outstanding research paper. ARBE—DPE is a national honorary professional graduate society in business education. Dr. Roberson and I were excited about the award because this research was our first collaborative effort. Now we are enthusiastic to continue this research for further publication."
