EKU Management Professor Teaches in Germany, Presents Work in Ireland

Dr. Allen D. Engle, Sr., professor of management in the School of Business at Eastern Kentucky University, returned recently from teaching a three-week course on human resource management in Berlin, Germany to a class of 53 students in the Master's in European Business Program at the Ecole Superior de Commerce a Paris (ESCP-Europe). 

The oldest business school in the world (founded in 1819), ESCP-Europe has campuses in Paris, London, Madrid, Berlin and Torino. The class was composed of graduate students from some 10 countries from around the world.  Engle holds an appointment as a visiting professor at the Berlin campus. The Berlin campus of ESCP Europe is located in the totally internally retrofitted and updated Wilhelmine Kaiserina's children's hospital complex of buildings, restored to its 19th century exterior and once a part of the extensive palace complex of the Schloss Charlottenberg in western Berlin.

While in Berlin, Engle held a series of meetings with Professor Marion Festing, chair holder in Human Resource Management and Intercultural Leadership and newly elected rector at the Berlin campus. He also had an opportunity to meet with a number of Festing's doctoral students, several of which have co-authored conference proceedings, book chapters and refereed journal articles with Engle over the past several years.

During the last week of June, Engle made two refereed conference presentations at the 11th World Conference of the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management (IFSAM) at the campus of the University of Limerick in Limerick, Ireland. Engle presented one paper with co-authors from Hungary, Estonia and Serbia on the HR practices of multinational enterprise subsidiaries in seven countries of central and eastern Europe, as well as a sole authorship paper analyzing the executive assessment practices of the Central Organization Department of the Communist Party of China in the light of some of his published theoretical models of executive competencies and cross-cultural performance management systems.

Prior to the start of the conference, Engle was one of 12 senior faculty members worldwide asked to share their expertise in a day-long pre-conference session with doctoral students, providing feedback to the young academics as they hone their dissertation topics, methodologies and designs in the second IFSAM Doctoral Colloquium. Later in the week, he met with co-authors Peter Dowling of La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia and Marion Festing of ESCP-Berlin to discuss issues related to the upcoming publication of the sixth edition of their joint textbook, "International Human Resource Management." The worldwide best-selling title is published globally by Cengage Publishing, under the imprint of South-Western Publishing in the United States.
