EKU's Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda members are no strangers to hard work. And this year is not exception. They kick off the year with a community service project following CityFest on September 15th. CityFest is the only time businesses are given the opportunity to directly market their products and/or services on campus. This year's event will run from from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the heart of EKU's campus - Powell Plaza.

PBL will be on hand as things wind down to help with trash clean-up. Chapter President Dalton Stanley encourages everyone to come out for the 8:15 pm briefing in Middle Powell and "join us in keeping our campus beautiful!"

Stanley also noted that EKU has the third largest chapter in Kentucky and brought home 19 awards from last year's state competition. Members followed up that outstanding performance by bringing home nine awards from National competition this past summer.

Chapter meetings are held every other Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in the Business and Technology Center, Room 071, with the next meeting set for Thursday, Sept. 22nd. Additional meeting dates are:

Maroon SHRM Participates in Annual KY SHRM Conference

L-R: Justin Morris, Autumn Blakeman, and Karlee Tanel

The 32nd annual Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management took place Aug. 30-Sept. 1, 2016, at the Galt House in Louisville. Eastern Kentucky Univeristy students were in attendance, representing their program and the University well. KYSHRM consists of 13 local chapters, as well as 14 school chapters throughout the state.

The conference itself centers on developing the professional lives of each of its attendees, and is particularly enriching for students. Several keynote speakers addressed topics such as workforce challenges within the state, the rise of HR as a profession, and research/analysis from businessmen and women. Several workshops, lectures, and professional development opportunities were offered throughout each of the days, in each session.

Students attending the conference included:

  • Mallory McGee (CEO- Chief Executive Officer)
  • Autumn Blakeman (CLO- Chief Liaison Officer)
  • Justin Morris (CIO- Chief Information Officer)
  • Karlee Tanel (CFO- Chief Financial Officer)
  • Austin Rhodes (Member)

CEO Mallory McGee said, "The conference was such a positive experience. I was given the opportunity to network, practice my public speaking skills, listen in on interesting sessions and be involved in a great organization that shares my passion for HR."

The other Maroon SHRM students expressed similar sentiments: “Thank you so much for your support and the opportunity to attend this conference. I am even more confident about my field of study as a result of attending. It further affirmed my belief that HR is the career for me. It was a great opportunity to be myself and interact with HR professionals who were friendly and willing to take time out of their day to share their expertise/advice.”

“The conference is going so well so far!! CJ [the volunteer coordinator] is awesome, and I've really liked the sessions I got to attend.”

“Definitely worth it!  The sessions were so awesome, and the networking was so fun too! I've met some great people.”

Tanel, a senior, added, “It really makes me understand and appreciate why I want to be in HR.”

KYSHRM has an upcoming Leadership Conference taking place on December 7-9th, in Covington, Kentucky. For more information on EKU's BBA in Human Resource Management, visit http://management.eku.edu/.
